The Pencil Sharpener

My little round iron pencil sharpener

I have a "running" nose, sniff, and my left brain is empty. Ideal condition for continuing the exercises. This is something we did in artschool, also while drawing nudes.
It is done on a Moleskine page which I cut out of the notebook, to smoothen the line in the middle. I held the little object in my right hand while I draw it from different angles with my left hand (non dominant) , (ink pen) not looking onto the paper, (only between shifting angles). Afterwards I put watercolour on with the right hand.
Have a nice day, here in Paris it is grey and it rains, sniff sniff atishoo, hatschi, hatchoum (resp. English/German/French sneezing:)

Oh Andrea, I am so sorry you have a cold and are feeling blah. I wish I were there to make you tea and soup to help you get through this. ARGH Well, I know you are in good hands with your husband to take good care of you.

I love this painting a lot. The lines are so alive and the colors really appeal to me a lot. Of course how can you not like working on that moleskine paper? It is so yummy. I wonder if they would sell it in packs? :)

I hope you feel a lot better very soon.

Kim Hi, thanks so much oh I'd love that, tea and soup and a little philosophying in a cosy corner somewhere....I'm already better when I can chat a bit here in blogland! And I went to Meg's blog a minute ago and joined her in an "anticomplainweek", isn't that wonderful?:):)

The Moleskine: I wrote them a mail to their contact address of their European Website to ask whether they have packs of this paper, never got any answer....Should try again perhaps, cause who knows where emails end up these days,

I like the way the colors unify the picture. It is so interesting to see how you use color on your drawings. The color is not always specific to the item drawn but more a painting in itself in some ways.

Hope your cold is better now. Be well, suki

Suki hi, thank you for the well wishes and you are so right about that the colour is not specific to the item drawn, in this cas specially, I just observe lights and shadows and then take the colours intuitively and put them on, with an eye on the overall composition. It is funny how I love this "otherhand" feeling that one can get away so very far from the original object, but it is still there in the painting. I love also that we can get very abstrakt by using this technique.

To me this work feels like your sunny personlity, trying to break through your cloudy rainy day,and your cold. The pencil sharpner your sneezes.
This whole week is the same here, gray, rainy,,,gosh, I guess it feels like Paris, what a nice thought that is!
Feel better, and don't forget to "starve a cold, feed a fever",,,or is it the other way around,,,,,,I can never remember,,,,

Oh I hope your feeling better. There is a bug going on around here too. So far we have by passed it. Fun drawing. looks like a tornado with objects swirling around in the wind. :))

Andrea, I've been seeing some other bloggers working with this practice of using the non-dominant hand and I find it so interesting, especially holding the subject, gleaning cues from its feel.

What you did with your pencil sharpener is delightfully complex.

Feel better...

What I find amazing is that once you know what something is you can see it - maybe like picasso or something.

being sick hasn't changed the fact that you are super super super...get well soon, and give us another 'sniffly' piece of art please.

San, dear San, thanks so much for leaving this interesting comment. It is really good to switch hands from time to time, and change things we always do in the same way. I feel that this doesn't only apply to painting...
