Poppies - Watercolour and Coloured Pencils

Watercolour and Coloured Pencils, Poppies, 32 x 42 cm

Not long ago I went to seen an exhibition: "Hokusai", a Japanese artist who lived in the 19th century. Hokusai, a painter and wood engraver did wonderful coloured woodcuts (a very famous one being "The Great Wave").

Some of his flower and nature paintings inspired me to work my poppies a little differently this time. With lots of thin black ink lines and subdued colours.

Andrea! I love the way you have done this painting...or this piece of art as some is not paint, right? You really have some beautiful, beautiful insights into this special flower. Your presentation of them is exceptional. I can almost fee the papery quality of the petals.

Exceptional!

Yvette, thanks so much, my favourite are the poppies with the moon too, although I enjoyed doing the last one too, but I prefer the dreamy atmosphere of the other one too...

Kim, thanks so much, and yes it it painting, I used ink-pencils, watercolour and coloured pencil, I tried to get a somewhat "ancient" look of the paper by using not so bright colours...

I am a fan of Hokusai though have only seen reproductions of his work not the originals. I love the feel of this painting, the sweet praying mantis and grasshopper on the stems, the ancient feel comes across well. There is a muted sense to the colors. A beautiful series of paintings,Andrea. PS read your notes on Kims blog about MIL visiting and you working in the living room. May peace be yours, Suki

Suki, thanks so much for your insightful comment and I'm glad you speak about the mantis and the grasshopper, cause I so loved drawing those.
And Hokusai, when I went there I realized that now and than I already had come across his paintings, on book covers or in the internet. What a pleasure to discover the ORIGINALS! They are awsome, and he also did tiny little drawings of people in motion (martial arts) in a little notebook, these are minuscule and so lifely. And I loved the way he draw men animals and plants, everything seems to have it's own special place in his heart.
This is when I think I'm blessed to live here in Paris where there are so many occasions to see and feel the original art of great artists. Only that I don't go often enough out of my shell into the exhibitions:) I promis myself I'll go more now:)
Thanks so much for inspiring me,
love
Andrea

Soft and delicate poppies - what a beautiful job you do of them. Particularly -- in the moonlight! (That's my favorite!)
