The Big Draw Day 8 - Café at the market- Exhibition N°1

The Big Draw Day 8: I went to the market this morning, and afterwards while waiting for the "Fromagerie" (cheese-shop) to open, I had a café crème and a tartine beurré ( french white bred with butter) and draw the inside of the nice Café. More people were sitting outside and some minutes after I draw the outlines of the sketch, lots of people came in to have a coffee while standing at the bar, but it was too late to draw them "in":)

Exhibition of three textile works in my husband's company: He took pictures yesterday, and will take more tomorrow at the opening of the exhibition. The organizers hang the 3 pieces right at the entrance together with sculptures, cause they do not fit into the rest of the exhibited artwork. I thought that they did a nice job, cause I love the little buffalo-sculpture:)

I showed you one spiritpocket/vessel and the watching spirit months ago, when both were almost finished. The second one I finished only a week ago.

Vessel 1 50 x 60 (19 x 23") - Palm tree bark, Silk, linnen thread, acrylic and textile paints
Vessel 2 60 x 80 (23 x 31") - Palm tree bark, Silk, thin copper wire, acrylic and textile paints
Watching Spirit 50 x 60 (19 x 23") - Cotton fabric, acrylic paint, goldmetallic thread, dyed silkthread, textile paint,
For the hanging I used bamboo branches.

klaproos, oh I just love your dragonfly, I have never seen more poetic photographs of a dragonfly! I recomment everyone here to go and look at them, which will make them happy for the day, at least!
Thanks for liking my textile works:)

Martine, thank you for your comment, I loved working with the materials and to transform them

Liebe Andrea,

Andrea, I very much love the sketch you made in the cafe. Isn't it funny how it seems everyone comes at the same time? I can just imagine you sitting there with your breakfast...with coffee?...and sketchbook.

The exhibit looks really good. I love these pieces a lot. I think the one pocket with the purple is my favorite, but I love them all and look forward to more photos! Beautiful work to be sure.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful success with us all.

Liebes Wurzerl,
wenn Du dann mal nach Paris kommst, machen wir genau das!:)

Kim:) thanks and yes, the pocket with the purple is my favourite too, and I think that I will work some more on the other one (I was in a hurry, blame it to the MIL, poor thing:), to add some tiny but important details...
The café was great, and it is fun to watch the French take their Espresso at the counter, standing, before going to work. Germans never do that, I mean, most of us like to sit down if we have coffee in a Café, or else we like to take it at home in the morning...
Funny, the differences in habits...
have a wonderful day

That coffee bar looks like it might have been a liquoir bar at one time. Must be beautiful wood?
Lovely drawing of it all.

Congratulations on this hanging of your art Andrea. They do look beautiful there. (I like the small buffalo too)...Your last mask is awesome. I love what you did to it with the gold frame around and the blue yarn on top! Love the eyes too. Wow!!!

I too thought the cafe looked like a bar, at least the ones I've seen in French movies. I too like to sit for my cafe rather than stand.

The spirit pockets and mask are wonderful. I love seeing your hanging solution. I have hung any number of things (usu paper) via bamboo and strings and in fact am quite partial to that simple solution to how to hang things. The little sculpture too is quite sweet and strong. Good luck with this show. Your husb very kind to take pictures.

Your exhibit looks wonderful, and I think I would prefer to have mine by themselves. Beautiful work, haunting colors...

Love the sketch! It reminds me of what happens when you take a very loooong exposure with a camera--no matter how many people are walking up and down the street, they don't show up on the film and the street looks empty.

Soulbrush, thanks so much, your comment is very motivating and uplifting,

Lynn, thank you and you know, these Cafés are really liquor bars at the same time. In the evening people come here after their work to have "apéritif" before they go home...

I love the little buffalo too, and do you remember how I sent you pictures of this mask when I was making it?:) Long time ago already:)

Suki Hi: I hope you are enjoying your birthday and that your finger is better now!!!
thanks so much for your comment, and yes husband is very nice to take these pictures! He is a sweetheart, a grumbling one but a sweetheart all the same:)
And the bamboo seemed to me the only good idea to hang these things nicely. For the other masks, who are already in Germany and will be hanged soon for a first "exhibition night in town, and for which I did not provide bamboo, my brother will fix them on wooden branches, which is fine too. I like if it looks grown, organic, natural.

Karen hi!!!! thanks so much for your visit, I love your insightful comment about the looooon exposure:) In fact it was just like that: I sat there and had plenty of time to draw this, (not like the metroportraits) and exposed for a very looooong time:) Its fun to think of it like that,

wow.. lovely drawing. so much detail. Dont the French like standing at the bar because it costs more to sit at the tables?
Nice of your hubby, grumbling or not, to take pictures for you. :))
How long will it hang there? Did I understand them to be hung at the entrance? Now that is good. First seen last seen. :)

I love the sketch of the cafe. And the spirit pockets are extrodinary.

Love your sketched Andrea. The cafe one has a nice sense of motion in it. People coming and going as you sat sketching. I always feel a little uncomfortable drawing in public. silly really. I will challenge myself to do more of it this month:)....Did I just say that!!!!

Everything here is lovely!
The drawing is very moody, love it and the other art work; such lovely colors and shapes!

Cris, I haven't aswered your question yet, I try to at least come here and answer the comments, even if I have lots of trouble to get to everybody's blogs these days...

Yes, I think it costs less than when you sit down, I mean the Espresso. But I think they also like it, to stand there and chat a bit with the barkeeper and the others, because often they are "regulars", coming in each day in the morning before work. It's a very sociable thing. Not good for me (hermit) cause I don't like lots of talking in morning:), but I love to watch them:)

Genie, thanks so much for visiting and I hope the people there will like my textile art too. When my husband brought the three works, the organizers there wondered what this could be, they are not very much into textile art, never have seen much of it. The other works are mainly sculpture and paintings, I'll post pictures soon.

Micki:) Hi, thanks for visiting, yes I know it has been a long time since I haven't shown any textile art, cause I'm so busy exploring drawing and painting and colour at the moment. But there will be more soon, as I have to finish another mask for the exhibition in November.

hi and thank you and oh, I can relate to this feeling of uneasiness. But once you have done a few drawings, it goes away. But still: sometimes I do not take my sketchbook out because I just don't "feel" the situation...

Marianne, thank for your encouraging words, I whish I could work 24 hours in my studio, and not only from 9 to noon, and then in the weekends, but on the other hand, I would not have all the inspiration which my way through Paris turns out to be:)

Love the Cafe at the market and the work on exhibition. the Face is phenomenal!!!!!!!! enjoy pjc

Unknown said...

Peter thank you for your encouraging comments. I guess the people who organized the exhibition and hang all the pieces weren't accustomed to textile art and did not really know what to say about it:), I like the idea of surprising people with something new, a new way of putting a face onto fabric, or of using material we normally never touch...
